Risen from Ash absolutely delivered for me and has officially earned a spot among my favorite reads of the year.

The plot pacing was nearly perfect. Every chapter either moved the story forward, revealed a new secret, or introduced another piece of the puzzle. There was never a point where I felt myself wanting to skim ahead or wishing something would happen; because something was always happening. And just when I thought I had everything figured out, Samantha Vargas threw in multiple twists toward the end that I genuinely did not see coming.

The character development was another standout. By the end of the book, I had VERY strong feelings about certain characters (looking at you, King and Baila), while others completely won me over. Moira, in particular, became an unexpected favorite. The relationships throughout the story are messy, dynamic, and realistic; filled with conflicting motivations, loyalty, and difficult choices that make the world feel lived in.

What impressed me most, though, was how seamlessly Vargas balances fantasy with real-world issues. Beneath the magic and epic adventure are themes of classism, wealth disparity, propaganda, and authoritarian control. It gives the story an extra layer of depth without ever feeling preachy or taking away from the fun of the adventure itself.

As for negatives? I honestly struggled to come up with any. If I had to nitpick, this wasn't an emotionally devastating read for me; I laughed out loud more than once, but I never reached for the tissues. That said, the constantly moving plot more than made up for it.

One thing worth noting for prospective readers: there is no spice in this book. Personally, I didn't miss it at all. The characters, plot, and worldbuilding were more than enough to keep me fully invested from beginning to end.

If you enjoy epic fantasy with found family, political intrigue, unexpected twists, and themes of hope and resistance, Risen from Ash deserves a place on your TBR.
